Canon mirrorless cameras for nightclub photography

I'm going to be discussing the different levels of Canon mirrorless cameras in this post: entry-level, mid-range, and high-end. Mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) are becoming more mainstream with more people now switching over. One of the main selling points and advantage for switching to MILC is that they're lighter and smaller. How would they perform for nightclub photography?

Entry-Level: Canon EOS M100 or Canon EOS M200

The Canon EOS M100 is an entry-level mirrorless camera that does not have a large rubber grip, multiple control dials, or a hot shoe. The EOS M100 has a 24.2 MP APS-C sensor and features the DIGIC 7 image processor.

The Canon EOS M200 is the replacement for the Canon EOS M100. It's slightly better and features the DIGIC 8 image processor.

Because both of these mirrorless cameras don't have a hot shoe flash, they would not perform well in nightclub photography. The built in flash is not good enough to produce the desired image. The auto focus would be rather slow in a dark environment too.

Mid-Range: Canon EOS M6, Canon EOS M6 Mk II, or Canon EOS M50

The Canon EOS M6 and the newer model Canon EOS M6 Mark II have a hot shoe for an external flash. However, both of them do not have a built-in electronic viewfinder. You could get an auxiliary electronic viewfinder finder, but it attaches to the camera through the hot shoe meaning you could either use the hot shoe for the external flash or the electronic viewfinder; you can't use an external flash and an electronic viewfinder at the same time. You could use the LCD to compose the picture when using an external flash, but it sort of gives that amateurish vibe like you're using a point and shoot camera. I would not recommend the Canon EOS M6 or Canon EOS M6 Mk II for nightclub photography even though it has a hot shoe for an external flash.

The Canon EOS M6 would be an ideal camera to bring on vacation or on a hike when you don't want to lug around a DSLR and you want better quality pictures than what you would get from a point and shoot camera or your smart phone.

The Canon EOS M50 has a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor, DIGIC 8 image processor, and improved Auto Lighting Optimizer to ensure clean image quality with low noise. It has a built-in electronic viewfinder and a hot shoe for an external flash. It has a 3" touchscreen LCD that provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points. This screen also features a vari-angle to better enable shooting from high and low angles when not using the electronic viewfinder. You could also get a lens adapter and use your existing Canon EF or EF-S lenses.

The Canon EOS M50 with an external flash and the 15-45mm kit lens would be adequate for nightclub photography. It would probably perform similar to a Canon Rebel DSLR with an external flash and the 18-55mm kit lens. I would recommend using a Canon EF-M lens adapter and the Canon 17-40mm f/4 L lens with the Canon EOS M50 for nightclub photography.

High End: Canon EOS RP, Canon EOS R, and Canon EOS Ra

The Canon EOS RP, Canon EOS R, Canon EOS Ra are all full frame Canon mirrorless cameras. They're all fairly similar in features and specs with the Canon EOS RP having the least amount of features and lower specs because it's also the most affordable out of the three. These full frame mirrorless cameras are comparable to Canon's full frame DSLRs. These would be the ideal mirrorless camera bodies to use for nightclub photography. There's also an adapter available so that you can use your existing Canon EF lenses.

The size and weight of the full frame mirrorless camera bodies are not much different than their full frame DSLR counterpart so the main advantage of mirrorless cameras being smaller and lighter doesn't really apply anymore. The advantage of being smaller and lighter are more or less applicable to the entry level and mid range mirrorless cameras. If you already have a Canon DSLR and lenses, then stick with them for now.
